Compositing and Garden Project Updates

I'm making progress on the compost bin, but unfortunately it will not be done this week. I found worms, but I couldn't find them locally, so I ordered a lb of them online from this website. I purchased red wigglers, highly regarded as the best worms for a compost bin. I am going to drill the holes in my bin tonight, and come up with a tray that the bin will drain into. The liquid that drains out of the bin will be a useful fertilizer. I can't wait to get the worms, I'll then be ready to put everything together. I think I will maintain two bins eventually, depending on the level of output for the bins and the amount of waste I produce. (I've been working off of this amazing guide to setting up your own vermicompost bin, check it out if you're interested)

Tonight I'll be cooking a stew, starting with a home made broth made from kitchen scraps and then with fresh, farmers market veggies being added gradually. Cooking stews is a great way to get the most out of the end of season veggies, I'm going to be cooking a ton of stew over the next few weeks (and into the winter, too) and freezing a lot of it. Cooking your own stews is cheap and allows you to produce meals that can sustain you far into the cold winter months. If I make a large batch of stew every week, I can pretty much eat that stew throughout the week, all I need to buy is bread and a few other staples. I always try to include my complete protein needs in each stew I produce. As my freezer is increasingly dominated by soup the winter starts to look like a season full of amazing, low effort food, rather than a bleak period of hunger. I can't wait!

Finally, I'm going to be working on my back yard this weekend, I'm re-constructing a path and clearing some of the weeds that are growing on the ground. I am planning on setting up planters in back, but I'm unsure, at the moment, of what I will use for my planters. I had considered building them out of wood, but I am concerned about the potential price tag this would come with. Instead, I think I will find things that I can use myself, unfortunately getting the best possible results out of this will take a long search. Once this is done, I'll have a great back yard and an area for planting next season's summer veggies! I personally cannot wait to really take control of my own garden.

I am thinking of purchasing some of these globes (I already have a few but I want more) for my back yard garden. I want my garden to have a magical quality, people should feel like it is a special place, because thats what it will be to me.
